»Transitioning from niche market leaders, to one of the world’s most dynamic and action focused building industry organisations

Green Building Councils are at different stages of maturity. Market transformation within a country can be rapid if the foundations are in place, as complex social, political, and economic factors align. This session will look at the market transformation journey in a number of countries and the multi-facetted role of GBCs. Strategies from other movements will be de-constructed to give insight into how we can have more impact both individually and as a global network.

» Launching: The World Green Building Campaign
Tackling global climate change, meeting local priorities

Together we can demonstrate that the potential of the built environment to deliver cost effective, global carbon emission reductions is unrivalled by any other sector. While simultaneously meeting a wide range of socio-economic local priorities from affordable housing energy security, economic stimulus and job creation. The case for focus on our sector is clear, we now need to play our part in increasing the prominence of the building sector in Climate change commitments at COP16 and beyond.

Climate change is global challenge that requires global solutions. Members of the World GBC Policy Task Force have been working to create resources to communicate our common voice. These will be presented and discussion on activities for World Green Building week (20-24th Sept) will follow.

Outcome: Agreement on key priorities for Asia Pac region to be presented the next day in session 2.

Facilitator: Paul King,

Session 3
» Rating Tools and Common Carbon Metric

This session will look at the approaches to benchmarking - measuring and capturing performance data from buildings being used today. Then we will look at how the common carbon metric work will be integrated into performance based tools.

The Sustainable Building Alliance (SBA) has been working on harmonization of technical methods to create widely accepted methods of benchmarking. This work started in response to EU harmonization needs, but has now expanded with its global membership and partnership with the WGBC and UNEP-SBCI to ensure there is a common carbon metric.

The common carbon metric protocol goes beyond benchmarking, to use this data to create baselines for Cities and Countries, so governments can make commitments to emission reductions in the built environment. UNEP- SBCI will present how governments in the future will use this in the future and what will be promoted at COP16.

Facilitator: Robin Mellon, Executive Director Advocacy and International, GBCA
